Designations

Many of our neutrals have significant training, experience and expertise in Arbitration and/or Mediation.  Below are some explanations of their credentials, which may help you when choosing an Arbitrator or Mediator from our rosters.

Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb)

The C. Arb or Chartered Arbitrator designation is Canada’s only official designation for practicing Arbitrators. The Chartered Arbitrator designation has been established to recognize a "generalist competence" at a high level, the goal being to assist the public in finding experienced arbitrators. To ensure that a high and consistent set of standards is met by the persons entitled to use this designation, ADR Canada has established general principles, a set of criteria and a protocol to be used in assessing the eligibility of an applicant for the designation and for the granting of the designation.

Chartered Mediator (C.Med)

The “C.Med” or “Chartered Mediator” designation is Canada’s most senior designation for mediators with a general or special practice. The Chartered Mediator designation recognizes an superior level of generalist competence, the goal being to assist those requiring mediation services in finding highly experienced and skilled mediators. The C.Med designation is awarded to mediators who meet the qualifications set out, and is not dependent on any specific or prescribed mediator style. To ensure that a high and consistent set of standards is met by those entitled to use this designation, ADR Institute of Canada (ADRIC) has established general principles, a set of criteria and a protocol to be used in assessing the eligibility of an applicant for the designation and for the granting of the designation.

Qualified Arbitrator (Q.Arb) or Qualified Mediator (Q.Med)

The Q.Arb or Q.Med designation recognizes practitioners who have completed basic arbitration or mediation training. It is an intermediate step for some arbitrators or mediators working to receive their Chartered Arbitrator or Chartered Mediator designation. For others it is a final designation. The designations will assist the public to select an arbitrator or mediator who has the appropriate training.

Certified Arbitrator or Mediator

Arbitrators or Mediators who have some training in arbitration or mediation and have received a certificate of completion of that training, but who have not received a designation from the ADR Institute of Canada.
